Journi
Wouldn’t it be great to have your family health history right in your pocket? And to know what medical bills are coming up, and pay them right there, in one place? And, when you need to — have someone to talk to and help navigate the complex healthcare landscape. Journi was a promise to empower patients and caregivers while improving upon today’s often fragmented — and frankly, unfriendly — healthcare experience.
Journi was a startup within Cambia Health Solutions that took shape initially as a native app, and, further down the road, expanded into a responsive online presence. Journi has been my work focus from October 2017 to May 2021. Role: UI Design/Product Design
consistent UI language
My primary focus was designing a compelling, friendly experience that was simple to navigate and easy on the eyes. In 2018, just as Sketch launched their Library functionality, I worked on establishing a consistent UI language library that would help our team be more efficient while designing and iterating on the app’s functionality. The library kit has been updated and improved upon throughout the years, as we rebranded from the pilot to the Journi brand. It empowered our team to create designs that were close to final, which allowed us to get more done with our small team.
collaboration
One of our big wins was creating a close collaboration with our development team. We worked hand-in-hand to translate our design library into the dev library kit. Both the design and development teams had to work together to figure out a more efficient way to build our product. We held regular meetings to give each other insight into what we were solving at any given moment, and ensure we were aligned.

expanding into responsive web
Two audience segments we were interested in capturing were office workers and older employees who preferred to access Journi on a desktop computer — or just reluctant to download yet another app. In 2020, we worked on expanding the Journi experience and translating it to the web, while also taking advantage of the larger real estate.
conclusion
We created an easy-to-navigate, good looking app with features that people wanted. However, the data we relied on was insurance-based, and in some ways incomplete. In 2021, our parent company decided to adopt Journi’s design for the main product Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield member experience and Journi stopped being its own entity.
